President Gotabaya Rajapaksa of the Indian Ocean island nation of Sri Lanka fled the country by military plane early July 13, entering Malé, the capital of the neighboring Maldives, AFP reported. He had announced his intention to resign on July 13, but is believed to have fled the country first to avoid arrest.
He wished to travel to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on a commercial flight.
Mr. Rajapaksa was accompanied by his wife and bodyguards. According to aviation authorities in Malé, the military plane landed under police escort. He had initially hoped to travel to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on a commercial plane, but decided against it after airport officials in Sri Lanka asked him to check in for civilian passengers.
On July 9, when tens of thousands of people protested in Colombo, the largest city, Rajapaksa was evacuated before some of the demonstrators entered the president’s official residence. He then informed Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe and others of his intention to resign on July 13 and signed a document, but his whereabouts or his physical whereabouts were not reported.
According to local media, the Speaker of the National Assembly will officially announce the President’s resignation on July 13; he will convene the National Assembly on July 15 and then on July 19. The National Assembly will convene on July 15, accept candidacies on July 19, and then vote in the National Assembly on July 20 to choose a new president.
