Nonbinary Aliens in “Zombies 3”

Terry Hu, the New Jersey-born non-binary actor who made history in “Zombies 3,” which premiered exclusively on Disney Plus on July 15, is in the spotlight.

Zombies” is a coming-of-age musical film series that highlights the foolishness of prejudice and discrimination and the importance of accepting differences through the conflict and harmony between humans, zombies, werewolves, and other different species, along with high-level music and dance.

Terry plays A-Spen, an alien species newly introduced in “Zombies 3,” who, with his superhuman intelligence and telepathic abilities, has developed a new emotion called “love” since his arrival on Earth. Love” is a new emotion for A-Spen. In the film, A-Spen is a non-binary character, and this is the first time a Disney live-action film has featured a character who is open about his or her feelings.

Terry wrote about his journey on Instagram during Non-Binary Awareness Week 2022 (July 11-July 17), saying. ‘I came out as non-binary in January 2020. Deep down inside I always knew I wasn’t a girl, but I didn’t know how to express it. Maybe I was afraid to admit it to myself.”

Terry, who said that having a clear nonbinary identity makes those who self-identify as nonbinary feel “safe” and “validated,” said that she is proud to embrace her nonbinary identity and is proud of it. Terry said that he was able to accept and be proud of his nonbinary identity because of the normalization of his nonbinary identity by the queer community and friends around him. It is a heartwarming experience to hear so many young people say, ‘I’m glad that I have my own representation'” after “Zombies 3” was distributed.

Terry says, “I knew I was queer since I was in the womb (laughs),” but “I always hid (my LGBTQ+ identity) when I was little,” and that’s why she writes, “I’m glad that (the younger generation) has been able to find (or explore) their true selves from a young age.”

As Terry says, the next generation, known as Generation Z, is dealing with gender and sexuality differently than the older generation. One factor behind the more diverse and inclusive mindset is entertainment, which is expected to become more diverse and inclusive, and the impact of the history Terry has made in “Zombies 3” is significant. Zombies 3, in which Terry’s character A-Spen can be seen in action, is available exclusively on Disney Plus.
