Unexpected links between “Stranger Things” and “HSM”!

Season 4 of Netflix’s hit drama “Stranger Things” has been making headlines after it was discovered that a scene in the drama matches a scene in the movie “High School Musical 2.

Stranger Things” is an adventure film with monsters, while “High School Musical” is a school coming-of-age story. Although they are completely different works, it may be understandable that a coming-of-age movie was referenced in “that scene” in the drama. The scene is the fight between Will and Mike in the second episode of the drama.

In season 4, it was shown that Will is gay and likes Mike. Although the word gay is not used in the production, Noah Schnapp, who plays Will, states that “It is 100% clear that he is gay and that he likes Mike.

However, Mike is in a relationship with Eleven. Will has a bit of a fight with Mike, as Mike, who has been his best friend since childhood, now no longer cares about him and is in a difficult situation where he is obsessed with Eleven. The sequence of scenes resembles the scene in “High School Musical 2” where Troy, played by Zac Efron, and Gabriella, played by Vanessa Hudgens, say goodbye! This comparison video has been a big hit on the Internet.

Although some parts of the “Stranger Things” footage have been pieced together by fans, it can still be seen that the camera angles and development are quite similar. Also, in this scene, Will asks Mike, “What about us? In the corresponding scene in “High School Musical 2,” Troy and Gabriella are singing “Gotta Go My Own Way,” which is the lyrics to “What about us?

As a matter of fact, in 2019, when Season 4 was in production, the drama’s writing team mentioned “High School Musical” as a movie title that came up during their work. Since there are more than 100 films mentioned by name alone, not all of them are clear homages to all the movies that the writing team referred to, but as expected, it is safe to assume that this scene was made with “High School Musical 2” in mind.

In Season 4, Will had many painful scenes in terms of his love life. It is hard to believe that his painful feelings were linked to the breakup scene in “High School Musical 2”. Even if Will never gets together with Mike, many fans hope that he will be happy.

We look forward to seeing how Will and the other characters will end up in the final chapter, Season 5.
