The advice Tom Cruise gave Glen Powell, who plays Hangman in the movie “Top Gun Maverick,” is so cool it’s numbing!
Tom Cruise’s words to his co-star are too good to be true!
Actor Glen Powell, who plays the role of Hangman in the movie “Top Gun Maverick,” revealed at CinemaCon the advice he received from senior actor Tom Cruise during the negotiation stage.
As some of you may already know, Glen initially auditioned for the role of Rooster, played by Miles Teller. After failing to get the part of Rooster, Glen said he was not too keen on appearing in “Top Gun Maverick” in another role and decided to do so when he was given the opportunity to speak with Tom.
I auditioned for the part of Rooster,” he said. It was Miles Teller who got the role, though. When you actually see the movie, you realize it was perfect casting. But in a way, I was an egomaniac at the time, which was appropriate for Top Gun. But I was still able to be in this film thanks to Jerry (producer Jerry Bruckheimer), Joe (director Joseph Kosinski), and Tom. I was unsure if I wanted to be in the film, so they showed me aerial footage and test footage. Then I was given the opportunity to talk with Tom for several hours. Glenn also talked about the specifics of his conversation with Tom.
I was pretty confident in my choice of films and what I wanted to do, but I was surprised when Tom told me how he had built the career he has. Tom asked me, ‘Glenn, what kind of career do you want to have?’ I said, ‘A career like yours. I want to be you. And he said, ‘You know how I got here? And I said, ‘You’re picking good roles,’ and Tom said, ‘Glenn, no. I said, ‘Glen, no. I pick great movies, and I make them great.
That’s advice so cool I want to use it as a line in a movie…! And because Tom said it, it is very convincing. Glen says that Director Kosinski, who was present at the meeting, could see Glen’s heart melt when he heard Tom’s words, and needless to say, Glen decided to accept the role of Hangman after this discussion.
