Johnny Depp’s lawyer explained the case of Johnny Depp’s appeal against Amber Heard.
Why Johnny Depp decided to file an appeal
His lawyer explained why Johnny Depp filed an appeal against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, following Amber in her lawsuit against him for defamation.
As many of you know, the jury in the trial found that Amber’s 2018 op-ed in the Washington Post was defamatory and ordered Amber to pay Johnny a total of $15 million in damages. Amber also won $2 million in damages in her counterclaim against Johnny.
Amber’s side then asked the court to set aside the verdict on the grounds that one of the jurors had been replaced by someone else, but the judge denied Amber’s motion, saying that there was no evidence of fraud or wrongdoing on the part of the jurors. In response to that result, Amber’s side recently filed a formal application for appeal. In response, Johnny’s side also appealed the verdict of $2 million in damages, court records revealed.
Camille Vasquez, who is representing Johnny on the CBS program “This Morning,” was asked if she had thought about what she would do if Amber decided to appeal.
She continued, “Mr. Depp has decided to appeal himself so that the court can obtain the entire record. She insists on continuing to litigate this issue, and we have an obligation to protect our client’s interests,” and “It was to be expected (that Amber filed an appeal). From the day she lost the trial, she indicated that she would file an appeal,” he said.
Vasquez also responded that “it is fair to say” that “if Amber had not appealed, Johnny would not have appealed,” and that although this is not a money issue for Johnny, “in order to protect his interests, he has to respond by appealing on his own. He added, “I have to respond by appealing.
Incidentally, Johnny reportedly believes that he and Amber should “heal each other and move on. However, if the appeal is accepted, the case will go back to court, and the show host questioned, “How can they heal and move on when they are both still fighting in court?” Vasquez replied, “This is a very common legal process. We hope the court will uphold what we think is the right ruling and allow both sides to move forward.”
