Substantial non-compliance

On September 15, Kanye West announced that he was terminating his two-year partnership with “GAP” due to “substantial noncompliance,” CNN reported.

In 2020, “GAP,” which had been struggling with weak sales, tapped Kanye to develop the brand anew, signing him to a 10-year contract, reportedly to be renewed every five years.

The brand then launched a collaborative collection called “Yeezy GAP,” which became a hot topic, and at the end of last month, Kanye updated his Instagram for the first time in a while. He went on a tirade against GAP, calling out the brand for holding meetings without Kanye, for copying his designs, and for taking the liberty of nixing a photo shoot that included his own children.

Kanye’s lawyer, Nicholas Gravante, said in a statement that Kanye “had no choice but to terminate their collaboration” as “GAP” violated the partnership by not opening the originally planned “Yeezy” store and not distributing his apparel He said in a statement.

The lawyer commented via CNN that “GAP’s substantial breach of its contractual obligations has been costly, and Ye [Kanye] will now move forward quickly to make up for lost time by opening a ‘Yeezy’ retail store.”
