In South Korea, as a result of the decades-long war with North Korea, all able-bodied men must serve a minimum of 18 months of military service before their 28th birthday; in 2020, an exception was made to delay military service until the members of BTS turn 30, a controversial move. Therefore, it appears that 29-year-old Jin, the oldest member of BTS, will enlist later this year.
At a recent National Assembly session, South Korean Defense Minister Lee Jung-seop said that many options are being considered for the BTS military service issue. He said, “(BTS members) should come to the military. And I believe there is a way to not only give them a chance to practice, but also to allow them to leave the country and perform whenever they are scheduled to have concerts overseas,” he said. He continued, “As many people appreciate [artists in the military], it may help to further increase their popularity.”
Speaking of BTS, the group has been very active worldwide, visiting the White House to discuss “Asian Hate” with U.S. President Joe Biden and attending the “64th Annual Grammy Awards Ceremony. In the past, Lee Jin-young, CCO of BTS’s agency HYBE, referred to the issue of BTS members’ military service and said, “As long as we understand how important military service is an obligation in Korea, we certainly do not think we should talk about this matter lightly. However, I hope that a decision on the revision of the military service law will be made as soon as possible.
