The Malaysian government has blocked the theatrical release of Marvel’s latest film “Thor: Love & Thunder” because of its LGBT elements. This follows a ban on the screening of Disney’s “Buzz Lightyear,” Variety reported. Malaysian cabinet ministers announced on August 2 that the Malaysian government is working to curb gay culture.

The Disney film “Buzz Lightyear” was controversial even before its release, as its depiction of a kissing scene between two women led to a decision to ban its screening in 14 countries in the Middle East and Asia, including the UAE, Malaysia, and Indonesia, which consider homosexuality a crime.

And Marvel’s latest film, “Thor: Love & Thunder,” also did not pass censors. Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia Zahidi Zainul Abidin revealed. However, the minister also clarified that the authority is limited and does not cover cinemas and TV broadcasts, as well as streaming services such as TikTok and Netflix, which are based outside the country. As such, Disney is free to air its films on the Malaysian version of Disney Plus Hotstar, and “Buzz Lightyear” is reportedly already on the platform with an 18+ recommendation.

We have no control over foreign platforms, which are easily accessible online, but we have no problem with their domestic activities.” We always deal with them in a strict manner,” he commented. The Malaysian government is increasingly at odds with Hollywood studios and U.S. producers because of its efforts to censor LGBT content. Malaysia has previously blocked the screening of several films, including “Rocket Man.

In the past, Chris Evans, who starred in “Buzz Lightyear,” has spoken out against homophobic comments about the film. In an interview with “Reuters,” Chris candidly stated, “What’s true is that those [homophobic] people are idiots,” adding, “Every morning we wake up, society has progressed. The story of America, the story of mankind, is always about social awareness and growth, and that’s what’s good about us.
