Mads Mikkelsen, who replaced Johnny Depp as Grindelbard in the film “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” (Fantastic Beasts and Dumbledore’s Secret), has suggested that Johnny may return to the series.
Mads Mikkelsen’s meaningful comment about playing Grindelbard
Mads Mikkelsen, who replaced Johnny Depp as Grindelbard in the film “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: Dumbledore’s Secret,” suggested the possibility of Johnny’s return to the series in an interview with Deadline in the US.
As many of you know, in November 2020, Warner Bros. which produces the “Fantastic Beasts” series asked Johnny to withdraw from the role of Grindelbard after Johnny lost a libel trial* in the UK. Johnny responded to the request, and later announced through a personal message posted on his Instagram that he had dropped out of the “Fantastic Beasts” series.
*Johnny’s lawsuit in this trial was filed by the publisher of The Sun in the UK, which reported his domestic violence (DV) against his ex-wife Amber Heard.
I’m a big fan of Johnny,” said Mads, “I think he’s a great actor and I think he did a great job [with the “Fantastic Beasts” series]. However, I can’t just imitate him. (Johnny’s creation of Grindelbard) was too much like him to just copy him. That would be creative suicide. So I had to come up with something different, something mine, something that would bridge him and me. It was also scary. His fans were very kind, but at the same time very stubborn. I didn’t interact with them much, but I could understand their heartache,” he said, revealing the anguish he felt when he took over Grindelwald.
In fact, Mads had said this before he took over.
Now things have changed. He won his case*. We’ll see if he comes back. Maybe he will come back.”
*In April of this year, a trial was held in the United States in which Johnny sued his ex-wife, Amber Heard, for defamation, and although both parties were ordered to pay damages, Johnny legally won the case.
The statements regarding Johnny’s return to the series do not reflect the intention of the production side and are only Matz’s personal opinion, but at least Matz seems to consider the possibility of his return to the series as non-zero. The “Fantastic Beasts” film series is planned to be a five-part series, with the third film in production at this point, but nothing has been announced about the fourth and subsequent films.
