The Duffer Brothers, creators of “Stranger Things,” recently spoke with “IndieWire.

In the interview, Ross Duffer said, “Whenever we bring in new characters, we want to make sure they become an integral part of the story. This is the case with Eddie Munson this season (Season 4). I think, ‘In order for this story to really work, I need this character and I need to give him the engine he needs.’ But every time I do that, I get nervous. It’s important that the new characters don’t get in the way of the existing ones,” he said.

Ross added, “So we are very careful about who we bring in. Especially in the casting process, it took us a long time to find Joseph Quinn (who plays Eddie Munson), and we went through a lot of edits. We also had a lot of trouble casting Eddie, because if they weren’t great, we couldn’t add someone who would take away from our character,” he said.

Matt Duffer added, “The same can be said about Sadie Sink and Maya Hawke. Everyone knows that they come into a cast that they like and bring in new elements. But like Ross said, these three and Daker Montgomery, who plays Billy, are great actors, so I really enjoy them. But I like to make changes, so I’m changing things up by changing the plot and adding new monsters. For Season 5, I’ll try not to add as many new characters, just to focus on the OG characters,” he said.
