On August 23 (Japan time), the Dodgers announced that they have signed Max Muncy to a one-year, $13.5 million contract extension plus a one-year team option ($10 million plus piece value).
This contract extension was a little early birthday present for Muncy.
Muncy, now 31, signed a three-year contract with the Dodgers in February 2020, and the deal replaces a $13 million per year team option for next season. According to Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times, the team option in the deal does not include a buyout.
Muncy will celebrate his 32nd birthday on August 25 (local time), so “MLB Trade Rumors” reported that “this contract extension was a little early birthday present for Muncy. After failing to make it big with the Athletics and being picked up by the Dodgers on a minor league deal in April 2017, Muncy suddenly broke out with 35 home runs in 2018. The following year, in 2019, he hit 35 homers and earned his first All-Star Game selection, proving that the previous year’s success was no fluke.
In 2020, a shortened season due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus, he struggled with a .192 batting average, 12 home runs, 27 runs batted in, and an OPS of .720, but he recovered last season, hitting 36 home runs, the most in his career, and being selected to his second All-Star Game. However, he has once again suffered from an extreme slump, batting .190 with 16 home runs, 47 runs batted in, and an OPS of .711 in 99 games played so far this season.
In August, however, he posted a .328 batting average (58 hits, 19 hits), 5 doubles, 7 home runs, 15 runs batted in, and an OPS of 1.185 in 16 games. The fact that he is showing signs of recovery may have helped him to extend his contract. He is a long-range hitter who has hit 35 or more homers in a season three times, and he is also a utility player who can play first, second, and third base, and will be a valuable asset to the always-winning Dodgers team next season and beyond.
