There was a reason why the love scene between Maverick & Penny in the movie “Top Gun Maverick” was more subdued than that of Maverick & Charlie in the previous movie.
The director’s thoughts on the love scene between Maverick and Penny
In an interview with USA TODAY, Joseph Kosinski, the director of the worldwide hit movie “Top Gun Maverick,” revealed his thoughts on the love scene between Tom Cruise’s Maverick and Jennifer Connelly’s Penny.
As many of you know, in the previous film “Top Gun,” Maverick fell in love with a female instructor, Charlie (Kelly McGillis), and there were some very intense love scenes. This film also has a romantic element, with Maverick and Penny falling in love, but the scene in which they are brought together is mainly a conversation, with only a kiss at the end.
Director Kosinski had this to say about why the love scenes were more subdued than in the previous film.
The relationship between Maverick and Charlie is obviously different [from the relationship between Maverick and Penny]. Maverick is at a different point in his life now than he was then. Maverick and Penny’s relationship is much deeper than just purely physical. In this film, she is the emotional counterpart that is really important to Maverick. I thought this was a fitting way to tell our story.”
Incidentally, as some of you may know, Penny does not appear in the previous film, but there was a scene in which Goose mentions her name as a woman with whom Maverick had some kind of relationship. Speaking of their relationship, Jennifer said, “We first met when we were both quite young. They bonded and had a flaming love affair, but it didn’t work out. But after that, they kept coming back to each other,” she explained in an interview with FilmIsNow in the US.
