However, director Joseph Kosinski likes the idea. In an interview with THR in the US, when asked what he would like to say about the hypothesis, the director expressed this thought.
“(Laughter). No, I don’t. Films can be interpreted in many different directions, and I like it when the audience finds a different meaning (than what was intended). So I enjoy hearing that hypothesis, and I think there is a mystical element to this film that leads to that kind of interpretation. Based on who Maverick is, what he represents, and the fact that he has experiences at different stages of his life, etc. So I like that hypothesis. Based on how you see the world and what experiences you have, a film is subject to its own interpretation. So I won’t water it down there. I think it’s a really cool interpretation of the story.”
While some moviegoers and producers are not interested in original interpretations, others like them. Director Kosinski seems to be the latter.
Maverick may not have lost his life, but isn’t this scene a dream? This scene could be interpreted as a dream, even if Maverick did not lose his life.
