Mets’ owner “has the power to keep deGrom”.

Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom may become the first $50 million player in history. The New York Post featured an article by Jon Heyman that stated, “DeGrom and other potential opt-out players could make the free-agent market a lively one this offseason.

The Owner “have the power to keep deGrom around.”

According to the article, there are a number of star players expected to exercise their opt-outs or become FAs without player options this offseason. In addition to superstar free agents Aaron Judge and Trai Turner, “Jacob deGrom (who some believe is on track to become the first $50 million player), Justin Verlander, Carlos Rodon, Carlos Correa, and Xander Bogaerts are expected to exercise their opt-outs or choose not to use their player options, and if they do, this offseason is expected to be the best group of free agents in recent years.”

DeGrom, the strongest right-hander, who has won the Cy Young Award two years in a row since 2018, was so “deeply disappointed” that he replaced his agent after the last negotiations. DeGrom has always publicly stated that he would use an opt-out. Mets owner Steve Cohen told the media that he wants deGrom to stay and that he has the ability to keep him around,” said the prospect. DeGrom has not revealed his asking price, but Mets watchdog Mike Puma predicted that it would cost $50 million or close to it to keep deGrom in Queens. Reasons given were that ultra-elite pitchers are scarce, they are believed to be able to make a big impact in October, and his contract would be shorter.

Verlander also has a $25 million player option, but is expected to raise his salary sharply and try to turn it into a multi-year deal. Verlander and deGrom can use Max Scherzer’s record-setting salary ($43.33 million) contract as a comparison and benefit from it, even if they don’t hit the $50 million mark. These three starting pitchers are likely to be the top three on the annual salary leaderboard.” It will be interesting to see how these superstars fare this offseason.
