U.S. President Joe Biden has taken a major step toward decriminalizing marijuana.

This will result in the nullification of charges for those previously convicted of violating federal law by possessing marijuana.

From the time of his run for the presidency, President Biden has pledged to “decriminalize marijuana possession,” and this announcement is considered to be the first step in that direction.

In his announcement, President Biden said, “As I have said in the past, no one should go to jail just for using or possessing marijuana. Today, I have decided to take a step forward to end the failed approach we have taken thus far.

He added, “First, I will pardon all convictions for the offense of simple possession of marijuana. Many individuals who have been previously convicted of simple possession may be deprived of employment, housing possession, and educational opportunities because of their crimes. With my pardon, I hope to remove that burden,” said President Biden. “Second, I urge the Governor to pardon offenses for simple possession of marijuana in the state. I want to make sure that no one goes to federal or local prisons simply for possessing marijuana,” he continued.

President Biden added, “Third, we will change the classification of marijuana. Currently, marijuana is classified as more serious than fentanyl and on the same level as heroin. This is not at all understandable. We are currently in the process of directing a review of marijuana’s classification under federal law,” he said.

President Biden was appealing for policy implementation, saying, “Today we begin to right these wrongs,” saying, “It upsets too many people’s lives to be thrown in jail just for possessing marijuana, even though it is legal in many states.”
