A teacher was shot and killed on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on the afternoon of August 28, and a suspect is in custody.

The gun used in the crime was never found at this time.

The university president told a press conference on the evening of August 28 that the shooting was reported shortly after 1 p.m. on August 28, and the suspect was taken into custody shortly after 2:30 p.m. on August 28.

 

The names of the deceased faculty member and the suspect have not been released. The head of the University Police Department said they are investigating the suspect’s motive. The gun used in the crime has not been found.

 

The campus was temporarily ordered to evacuate indoors, but this was lifted a few hours later. Classes and activities on campus were suspended until August 29.

 

Video from a local CNN affiliate showed numerous police vehicles dispatched to the campus and people coming out of nearby buildings in single file.

 

A reporter from a local CNN affiliate also filmed a person wearing a dark shirt, jeans, and glasses being handcuffed and surrounded by police officers while evacuating indoors.
