Nadia Whittome, a member of the opposition Labor Party, wrote on Twitter (Twitter), “The Sunak couple are sitting on a £730 million fortune. This is almost twice the estimated wealth of King Charles III,” she posted. He called on people to “remember this when Mr. Sunak says he will make ‘tough decisions’ that the working class will pay the price for.”

Born to African Indian immigrant parents, Mr. Sunak grew up in a privileged environment and attended private schools, including the prestigious Winchester College, before attending the University of Oxford. After graduation, he worked for U.S. financial giant Goldman Sachs and two hedge funds.

In 2009, he married Akshata Murty, the daughter of a wealthy Indian billionaire. Mr. Murty owns a large stake in his father’s Indian IT giant Infosys, and the couple is listed in the Sunday Times’ list of the UK’s richest people.

In April of this year, Mr. Sunak’s reputation was tarnished when it came to light that Mr. Murti, who lives in the U.K., declared himself as a non-resident in order to exclude some of his income from taxation. Mr. Murti subsequently stated that he would pay taxes in the UK on income earned in India.

Since British voters are sensitive to issues related to social class, Mr. Sunak has frequently told stories about helping his family’s pharmacy as a teenager in an attempt to appeal to the “common man. On the other hand, however, he has also played up such blunders as appearing as if he did not know how to pay by card at a kiosk, having his picture taken at a gas station filling a car he does not own, and inspecting a construction site wearing shoes by the luxury brand Prada.
