On November 17 (local time), the MLB Network, a U.S. specialty station, announced the MVPs of the season by the National Baseball Reporters Association. Aaron Judge (New York Yankees) of the American League and Paul Goldschmidt (St. Louis Cardinals) of the National League received the most first-place votes from the 30 reporters eligible to vote and won the prestigious awards.

The “race” that has been the talk of the town for so long has finally come to an end.

Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles Angels) was also nominated as a finalist in the American League. While the outcome of the race attracted a great deal of attention both at home and abroad, Judge, who hit 62 homers during the regular season, a new league record, won the award for the first time in a landslide.

The result was not surprising. This season in Major League Baseball, the “pitching high, hitting low” trend has accelerated due to the introduction of the “no-fly ball. While the average batting average has dropped to .243, the fourth worst in history since 1900, Judge showed no signs of being affected by the change. He continued to fly from the start of the season, hitting .311 with 62 home runs, 131 runs batted in, and an OPS of 1.111, a high average.

But Ohtani, who was constantly called “deserving” and “not a judge” right up until the end, also had a tremendous performance. He became the first player in the history of American baseball to hit 30 home runs and win double-digit games in a season, and to reach the double-digit hitting and pitching milestones.

Even so, Judge received 28 of the 30 first-place votes for the award, and Ohtani’s strong performance, receiving two first-place votes, has been met with a series of resounding responses in the United States.

The U.S. broadcaster Bally Sports West again praised the big star of his favorite team, the Angels, saying, “He (Ohtani) was not human. The U.S. data specialist Codify added, “It was two absolutely spectacular seasons. The months-long, intensely debated contest has finally come to an end,” recalled the controversy that the two sides had sparked.

Perhaps there are two sides to this vote. However, I would like to pay tribute once again to both men for making people so passionate and providing so much entertainment.
