The franchise, which began in 2003 with “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” got off to a strong start with films that felt fresh. However, by the time of 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the series’ popularity had slowed. Nonetheless, the latest installment continues to perform well at the box office, meaning that with the right project, audiences are still willing to seek out more.

Margot Robbie’s “Pirates of the Caribbean,” developed with “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn” screenwriter Christina Hodson, breathes new life into the nearly 20-year-old franchise. It was a chance to breathe life into it and do something a little different. As Robbie proved by playing Harley Quinn, she is more than qualified to front the action/adventure franchise. Robbie is one of the most successful stars working today, and there has been much disappointment in the cancellation of the Pirates project with her at its center.

However, some are saying that Margot Robbie’s dropout from “Pirates of the Caribbean” may increase the chances of Johnny Depp’s return.

Johnny Depp has previously said that he would never return to the franchise, but that stance may change over time. Whether he returns or not, and aside from all the drama going on in his personal life, his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow was such an interesting and engaging character that it earned Depp an Oscar nomination. Whether he will return remains to be seen, but the Margot Robbie news seems to make that more likely than ever.

With the cancellation of Margot Robbie’s reboot, it is unclear what will happen to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series. Perhaps the original characters will make a comeback for the sequel and tell a new and different story.
