Helena Bonham-Carter shares her thoughts on cancellation culture and the trial of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.
Johnny Depp, who has successfully redeemed himself from the label of “domestic violence husband.”
In a recent interview with “The Times,” actress Helena Bonham Carter spoke about “cancellation culture,” in which celebrities are quickly erased from the public eye due to sexual harassment or domestic violence issues, saying, “Do we reject geniuses based on their sexuality? I suppose that a close examination of their personal lives would disqualify millions of people. I can’t reject someone. I hate cancellation culture. It’s hysterical, it’s a witch hunt, and I don’t understand it,” he said.
As for whether or not it is possible to start over, she said, “Not with someone like Kevin Spacey (who has been sexually harassed numerous times). Johnny has done exactly that,” she said, referring to Johnny Depp, who has successfully returned the label of “domestic violence husband.
Helena and Depp have co-starred in various films in the past, including “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
As for the defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard, which ended in Johnny’s victory in July this year, Helena said, “He has been completely vindicated,” and encouraged, “He’s fine now. No problem,” she exhorts.
As for Amber Heard, she said, “In my opinion, I think she got caught up in the ‘#MeToo movement’ (a massive sexual harassment protest movement centered in Hollywood),” and added, “That’s the big problem, people are jumping on the bandwagon because it’s a fad and becoming a billboard because it’s a hot topic. People are trying to get on the bandwagon because it’s trendy, and they want to be billboards because it’s a hot activity.
In this interview, Helena also discusses her views on author J.K. Rowling’s “transphobic” comments.
