Glen Powell, who played the Hangman in the film “Top Gun Maverick,” revealed the advice he received from Tom Cruise in preparing for the role.
Glen Powell’s conflicted feelings about playing the role of the Hangman.
In an interview with GQ, Glen Powell, who played the arrogant but lovable hangman in the movie “Top Gun Maverick,” reflects on the conflicts he faced in his role and the memorable words that Tom Cruise, the lead actor, said to him during filming.
Glen, who initially auditioned for the role of Rooster, said that when he was called in to read for the role of Hangman, he was more anxious than hopeful about the role. It took time and persuasion for Glenn, who describes his first impression of the Hangman as “the Navy’s version of Draco Malfoy” with “a nasty son of a bitch for a sidekick,” to understand the complexity of the Hangman.
The Hangman was there to give the Rooster character some conflict. (It was good (from a narrative standpoint), but he (the Hangman) had no depth and was never rewarded. I didn’t know why he existed. It was a quantum leap from there. In retrospect, I’m like, “God, I couldn’t pass up this opportunity (for whatever reason),” but it wasn’t that obvious at first.
Advice from Tom Cruise during filming
Once filming began, he found ways to make his hangman more likable with Tom’s help. He also revealed that Tom advised him not to put his feet up high when he was sitting somewhere, as it could be considered rude in other countries.
Here is what Tom had to say to Glenn.
Tom said to Glenn, “You don’t have to be a character that people root for, but you do have to be someone they want to watch. There are people in the world who will lose their emotional connection to your character because of one body language.”
Glenn also said that his experience working with Tom has broadened his knowledge of the film industry and clarified the kind of movie star he aspires to be. Glenn, who has the deepest respect for Tom, said, “If you want to make a film of that size and budget, like ‘Top Gun Maverick,’ you have to be able to justify your worth as a star. You have to be able to exert creative influence to make sure that that film is shown around the world. That’s where the studio trusts Tom. They look at Tom and say, ‘You know what to do. Do it. That’s a really fun challenge. Do I have the ability to do that?” He stated.
