Actress Kate Winslet, 47, who appears in “Avatar: The Way of Water,” the latest in the series that master filmmaker James Cameron has poured his heart and soul into, revealed that she thought she was “dead” during the filming of the movie.
Am I dead? Am I dead? I have footage of me surfacing (from the water) saying, “Am I dead?
While the previous film “Avatar” (2009), which was a worldwide hit, depicted the forests of Pandora, the sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” as the title suggests, takes place in the new world of the “vast and beautiful ocean” of Pandora. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), who now has a family with his wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), takes on new responsibilities as a “father” and once again confronts humanity to protect his beloved family.
In an interview with Total Film magazine just before the release of the film, Kate confessed that she thought she was “dead” when she surfaced for air after holding her breath underwater for 7 minutes and 15 seconds.
‘Am I dead? Am I dead? I have a video of me surfacing [from the water] saying, ‘Am I dead? And I couldn’t believe it,” she added.
The reason Kate was holding her breath for so long was not directed by Director Cameron, but only to break her own record. Kate not only broke her own record, but also surpassed the record of [6 minutes] set by actor Tom Cruise in 2011 while filming the movie “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.
I just had the opportunity to achieve a record. I wanted to beat my record of six minutes and 14 seconds. I was like, ‘Come on, let’s go,’ so I beat my record by a minute.”
Kate worked extensively underwater during the production of Avatar: The Way of Water. It was part of Cameron’s overall mission to make the film’s underwater scenes as authentic as possible. To that end, the cast all learned to scuba dive, and Cameron also developed new technology for shooting motion-capture scenes underwater.
Kate says that the biggest challenge for her was whether she could blend in with Cameron’s imaginative world.
Avatar: The Way of Water” will be released in theaters worldwide on December 16 (Friday).
