On December 17, former England footballer David Beckham publicly expressed his views on the controversial and expensive ambassadorship contract with Qatar, the host country of the 2022 World Cup, for the first time, saying that he believes “sports has the power to make the world a better place. He said he believes that “sports has the power to make the world a better place.
The contract is a three-year deal worth $15 million per year.
On December 16, the New York Times published an article titled “The World Cup’s Missing Voice,” which reported that Beckham, who played for Manchester United and Real Madrid, was almost completely absent from public appearances during the World Cup. The article claimed that the Qataris were disappointed that Mr. Beckham, who played for Manchester United and Real Madrid, had not appeared publicly during the World Cup and that they had not received a return on their investment.
The article reported that Mr. Beckham has set strict conditions for his appearances and seems to be avoiding questions about Qatar’s laws prohibiting homosexuality and other issues.
In response to the article, a spokesperson for Mr. Beckham commented, “David has been involved in several World Cups and other major international tournaments as a player and ambassador, and has always believed that sport has the power to make the world a better place.
I understand that there are different and strong views about our work in the Middle East, but I am positive that the first World Cup in the region has been a direct catalyst for initiating discussions on key issues.
I hope that these discussions will lead to greater understanding and empathy for all and that progress can be made.”
Earlier reports suggested that Beckham had signed a 10-year, $180 million (about $24.6 billion) contract to promote the World Cup in Qatar, but later reports said the deal was a three-year contract worth $15 million (about $2 billion) per year, with an option to extend.
