On August 3, Newsweek, a U.S. media outlet, reported on the price of tickets for Lionel Messi, the Argentinian international who has scored five goals in his first three games since joining Miami in the MLS this summer.

Messi, who scored twice in the League Cup match against Orlando City on August 2, is on a three-match winning streak.

The next match for the top eight will be against FC Dallas on August 5, and tickets for that match are reportedly going up in price. According to FC Dallas, tickets for the match sold out within 30 minutes of going on sale at noon ET on Thursday. It also reported that “the site crashed” an hour and a half before sales began, possibly due to a concentration of access. Ticket prices for the official sales start at $199 (about 28,000 yen).

The next match is Messi’s first away game. Many of those who were unable to purchase tickets are demanding tickets, and prices have skyrocketed. Currently, “the minimum price is $700 (about ¥100,000), and many are over $1,000 (about ¥143,000),” and “front-row pair tickets were over $27,000 (¥385,000) at one point,” and are circulating at high prices.

Comparing this to the fact that tickets for the concert of U.S. singer-songwriter Taylor Swift to be held in California the night before the match on StubHub, which sells online tickets in the U.S., were on sale for about $500 (about 71,000 yen), “the price soared even higher than Taylor Swift’s.” Messi’s popularity is reported.
