Sam Worthington of “Avatar” fame was a candidate to become the sixth James Bond. But why was he not selected?
Why Sam Worthington did not become James Bond
With the retirement of Daniel Craig, the sixth James Bond, the “007” movie series is attracting attention as to who will be selected as the seventh Bond. It is rumored that it will be a younger actor, and it was the same for the sixth Bond.
After “Die Another Day,” the final film of the fifth generation, Pierce Brosnan, producers began looking for the next Bond. The candidates remained Sam Worthington from the film “Avatar,” Henry Cavill, the DCEU’s Superman, and Goran Visnjic from the drama “ER Emergency Room.”
Sam was also a favorite of producer Barbara Broccoli, so much so that before the screen test, she cut Sam’s hair to match what she thought was a Bond vibe. But he was unfortunately not selected for that screen test. Sam analyzed the reason in an interview with Variety.
I could have played Bond as an assassin. But I just couldn’t bring out the gentlemanly side of him. That suit didn’t fit me. I didn’t know what I was doing.
There are many spy movies in the world about assassins. However, one of the factors that have made the “007” series a globally popular franchise must be the fact that the characters are elegant despite being assassins. The men’s suit is one of Britain’s proudest cultural assets, and the image of James Bond in an elegant suit creates the image of the film.
Being able to play a hit man is not enough. There were profound factors that made James Bond a globally popular character.
Nevertheless, Sam starred in “Avatar” three years after “Casino Royale,” and this year, after 13 years, he also appeared as a main cast member in “Avatar: The Way of Water. He has also starred in action films such as “Clash of the Titans,” “The Hunter’s Prayer,” and “The Titan,” and has been lucky enough to find a film that suits him.
