Pele, a hero of Brazilian football, had been suffering from colon cancer in recent years and was scheduled to undergo surgery in September 2021. However, it was recently confirmed that the cancer had progressed, and the hospital where he was admitted announced that his condition required a high level of care.
Pele, the “King of Soccer,” has passed away. He was 82 years old.
His daughter, Kelly Nascimento, had announced on social media that she and her family would cancel Christmas to spend time with Pele at the hospital. But on December 29, Nascimento said, “It’s all because of you. I will love you forever. Rest in peace,” and that Mr. Pele had taken his last breath.
Born in 1940, Pele made his debut at the age of 16 with Brazil’s famed Santos and continued to score goals for 21 years until 1977, when he retired. As a member of the Brazilian national team, he participated in the 1958 World Cup at the age of 17 and helped Brazil win the tournament, and he also played a major role in the following tournament in Mexico, establishing himself as one of the best players in the world.
He then contributed to Brazil’s victory in Mexico in 1970, becoming the only player in football to win three World Cups. Although nearly half a century has passed since his retirement, he continues to be regarded as the greatest player in football history, along with Diego Maradona, who passed away in 2020.
