Southampton manager Nathan Jones reflected on his side’s EFL Cup quarterfinal win over Manchester C on January 11.
Southampton did not allow Manchester C to fight back and won 2-0 to advance to the semifinals.
Southampton, who have lost six straight Premier League games and are at the bottom of the table, hosted Manchester C, the league’s second-place team, at home.
The game began with Manchester C attacking from the beginning, but Southampton took advantage of a moment in the 23rd minute when Sekou Mara scored the first goal of the game. Moussa Gennepo added another goal in the 28th minute. Southampton did not allow Manchester C to mount a counterattack, and the team went on to win 2-0 and advance to the semi-finals.
Reflecting on the game, Jones said, “It was a great night in terms of the game plan, the execution, everything about it. I’m really pleased. I am very proud of the players, especially the way they executed the game plan. I’m proud of them.
We had to play well, especially defensively. We needed to be organized and attack aggressively in the press. That’s our level and what we achieved. Now we have to keep doing that,” he said, looking ahead to future battles.
