The NFC East, the best district in the NFL throughout the regular season, is showing its strength in the first round of the postseason.

With the Philadelphia Eagles securing the number one seed, the New York Giants beating the Minnesota Vikings, and the Dallas Cowboys defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, three teams from the NFC East will advance to the Divisional Round of the 2022 playoffs. The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to advance to the 2022 playoffs.

This is the first time since the league realigned in 2002 that three teams from the same division will advance to the divisional round.

Not once have three teams from the same division made it this far in the playoffs since the old NFC Middle Division achieved it during the 1997 season. Back then, the Green Bay Packers, Vikings, and Buccaneers advanced to the divisional round; four teams from the NFC Middle Division made the postseason, with the Buccaneers beating the Detroit Lions in the Wild Card round.

From the time the NFL and AFL merged in 1970 until 2002, the league was divided into six divisions. However, since the NFL added the Houston Texans, there have been eight four-team districts.

The NFC East finished the 2022 season with a 43-23-2 record, five more wins than any other district. Next up is the AFC (American Football Conference) North Division with 38 wins. At least one team from the NFC East is guaranteed a berth in the conference championship, as the Eagles and Giants will play there on Saturday night, January 21. If the Cowboys beat the 49ers in Sunday’s game, the conference battle will be between the NFC East.
