The Milan derby was played on the grand stage of the CL semi-final.

This is the last Milan derby of the season, with Milan winning one and Inter winning two. The first official meeting between the two sides took place some 114 years ago, on 10 January 1909. At the time of the first meeting, Milan won 3-2. Since then, the two clubs have often fought heated battles as arch-rivals, both based in Milan and sharing the same stadium as home. According to data website Opta, this is the first time in history that the two clubs have met five times in an official match (including the second leg) in one season. This season, a new history will be made in the Milan derby.

This will be the first time the two clubs have met on the CL stage since the 2004-05 season. Back then they met in the quarter-finals. After Milan won the first leg 2-0 on home soil, a smoke bomb was thrown by a supporter towards Milan goalkeeper Gieda in the second leg on Inter’s home soil towards the end of the match. The game was treated as a 3-0 Milan victory by forfeit.

Milan now entered the big game in not bad shape, unbeaten in nine official matches. Milan coach Stefano Pioli has chosen his main men in the starting line-up, including Theo Hernandez, Brahim Diaz and Olivier Giroud. However, Raphael Leone, who was injured in the 34th Serie A match on 6 June, did not make it to the match and was not included.

Inter are also in fine form, having won five consecutive official matches. Simone Inzaghi started Federico Dimarco, Hakan Chalhanor and Lautaro Martinez for the high-profile clash. Romelu Lukaku and Marcelo Brozovic awaited their turn on the bench.

The game was level at the start of the eighth minute. Inter won a left corner kick and the kicker, Chalhanor, supplied the ball in-swinging with his right foot. Edin Džeko, who was waiting in the centre of the field, struck the ball with a left-footed volley to put Inter ahead from the opening set-piece.

In the next 11 minutes, Inter broke through on the left flank through Di Marco from a floated pass by Nicolo Barella. He received the ball in space and turned it into the middle, where L Martínez played the ball through to Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who ran in from behind. With his first touch, he broke into the penalty area and found the net with his right foot. Inter got a big extra point early on.

Inter were unstoppable and in the 16th minute, Czarhanor attempted a mid-range shot from a drop by L. Martinez, who kept the ball on the left side, but it hit the right post. L Martinez picked up the spilled ball and sent in a cross ball, which Jeko deflected with his head in the middle and the ball went to Barella on the far side. He turned it directly into the negative and Mkhitaryan, who was free, tried it with his right foot, but goalkeeper Mike Menyan was on hand.

Milan, who had fallen two goals behind early on, had an accident soon after. Ismael Benasser, who had injured his knee in the previous game, was eventually forced to play on and was replaced by Junior Mesias, who was forced to leave the pitch on the half-hour mark when a through ball from B. Diaz allowed J. Mesias to break down the right flank and Davide Calabria, running in at the last moment, fired a shot behind the axis. The Milan forward had a shot on target but failed to get on the end of the box.

Milan were unable to create any shooting opportunities, and the first half passed at Inter’s pace until the half-hour mark, when L. Martinez was brought down in the penalty area after a poor handling move by Simon Kjær and Inter were awarded a penalty, but after an on-field review, the decision was changed. The decision was changed after an on-field review. Nevertheless, Inter continued to create finishing touches through L Martinez and Denzel Dumfries, and the first half ended with Inter still in control.

In the second half, the decisive moment came for Milan: in the 51st minute, Sandro Tonari carried the ball from midfield and sent a through ball into space on the right flank. Joselu Messias broke free and broke into the right side of the penalty area, but his shot went wide of the goal.

Shortly afterwards, in the 53rd minute, Inter had a big chance. Alessandro Bastoni brought himself up and played it sideways, and Jeko reacted to make it one-on-one with the goalkeeper. It was a chance to decide the game, but goalkeeper Menyan made a great save.

Milan came close again in the 63rd minute, when Divock Origi collected a long feed from GK Menyan on the left and played in a diagonal pass, which was turned in by B. Dias, who was running to the left of the penalty area. The waiting Giroud drops it into the negative and Tonari reacts to the ball. From his first touch he fired a well-aimed right-footed shot which was deflected in at the left post.

The game went to time. The first leg, in which Milan were treated as a home team, went to Inter, who were able to defend two early goals. The second leg will take place six days later, on 16 January, at the same venue, but this time at Inter’s home.
