Avatar: The Way of Water,” the latest in the series that James Cameron has poured his heart and soul into for 13 years.

The film, now in blockbuster release, focuses on the continuing adventures of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldanha) as they forge their own family and life path. In the film, Sigourney Weaver plays the role of Kiri, the adopted son of Jake’s family and a key figure in the story.

Cameron revealed Kili’s importance to the story of “Avatar: The Way of Water” in a cast and crew Q&A published on YouTube by Vicki Marx. Cameron even had Sigourney direct her own scenes in order to get the acting and characters just right.

When she was in the spirit world and meeting her mother, Sigourney had to move quickly between the two. Grace, a very competent but loving scientist, then switched to her daughter who needed spiritual support. She’s playing the same scene as herself. So I worked with Alicia Vera-Bailey, whom Sigourney trusts very much. Alicia was able to do things that Sig (Sigourney) physically couldn’t do, like jump on a tank like a gazelle girl,” Cameron said. So he said, “I don’t want to direct Alicia. I don’t want to direct Alicia, I want you to direct Alicia,” he told Sigourney.

He then asked Sigourney to direct Alicia so that he and Alicia could build trust. I said, ‘Well, I’m going to put you in charge of that directing role,’ and I had Alicia do the acting and the movements of Kili,” Sigourney said. Sigourney did about 90% of it herself, including the underwater acting, but Alicia did some of it,” he continued.

Avatar: The Way of Water” is currently in theaters.
