Sam Smith released a music video for the song “I’m Not Here to Make Friends” from his latest album “Gloria,” which was released on January 27.

In this music video, Sam also wears sexy outfits such as corsets and nipple pasties (nipple covers) along with dancers. It also shows the dancers in their underwear looking intimate in bed.

However, according to Just Jared, several groups, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, have voiced concerns about the music video.

Fatphobic comments in the LGBTQ+ community

Sam has received fatphobic criticism from members of the LGBTQ+ community for wearing a corset in this video. One tweeter wrote, “Fatphobic gays will continue to pick on Sam Smith, but if the muscular gay guy on the right (in the music video) wears the same corset, they will cackle,” and the buzz is on.

Some gay fans also said, “I have no problem with Sam wearing a corset, but it simply doesn’t look good on him. ‘Fat or skinny, it can still look bad on you. The styling in this music video is objectively bad,” he criticized.

Comparison with Harry Styles

Many have drawn comparisons to Harry Styles, who is often praised for his genderless fashion. One user on Twitter defended Sam, saying, “While (supposedly non-LGBTQ+) Harry Styles expresses femininity and is praised for wearing dresses in his music videos, Sam Smith is non-binary and is dissed for doing the same.”

Others have also voiced their opinions, such as “Sam’s videos are inappropriate for children to watch; they shouldn’t be on YouTube.”

On the other hand, there are of course many who defend Sam.

One fan said, “Sam does the most creative and authentic work. People who are offended by it should think about whether they have been hurt in any way (by Sam). Sam is just being himself as an artist and a person,” and “Let’s be honest. Sam made a sexy video with transgressive art (art that offends basic morals and sensibilities and aims to go against them), but he’s being criticized because of homophobic, queer-hating, transgender-hating people. Even though cis (a person whose gender identity matches their birth sex) men are not criticized for being misogynistic (calling women bitches) or for cis women showing their sexy femininity to the fullest in their music videos. They have voiced comments such as “It’s hypocrisy.

Sam’s new song “I’m Not Here to Make Friends” has received a variety of opinions. It can be said that this is a phenomenon unique to the high-profile Sam Smith.

Sam is nominated for “Best Pop Performance (Group)” for “Unholy feat. Kim Petras” at the 65th Grammy Awards to be held on February 6 (Japan time), and is scheduled to perform there on the same day.
