Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said in an interview that he does not see Elon Musk, who has been CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and now Twitter, as a “great philanthropist” today.
He dismissed SpaceX’s efforts to develop a Mars settlement program as a “waste of money.
This was Gates’ response to a BBC interview in which he was asked if Musk would eventually join the club of big donors like Gates, Warren Buffett, and Jeff Bezos and eventually donate most of his wealth.
Gates said, “Oh, he will be a great philanthropist someday,” and that Tesla and others are already making a positive impact, even if not through philanthropy. He added, “I don’t think he’s going to spend a lot of money on himself most of the time,” he continued, “so I think he’s going to join the ranks of philanthropists one day in a way that he can use his ingenuity.”
On the other hand, he responded to Musk’s idea that mankind should become a “multi-planet species” by moving to Mars to avoid future extinction: “It would actually cost a lot of money to go to Mars,” he said. If you think about it that way, I would say, “Don’t go to Mars.
Through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Gates has spent billions of dollars on research and development and providing vaccines to poor countries. He said the foundation has also spent billions of dollars to make vaccines more accessible in an effort to eradicate polio from the world.
In 2010, Gates and Buffett launched a giving awareness campaign called “Giving Pledge. This is an initiative in which wealthy individuals pledge to donate at least half of their assets to charity, either during their lifetime or after their death, in an effort to motivate wealthy individuals who are unfamiliar with the concept of giving to charity.
Mr. Musk was invited by Mr. Gates to participate in this activity in 2022, but he declined. The reason was that Gates had a large short position in Tesla stock.
A short position, roughly speaking, is an investment technique in which a person sells a stock that he judges will fall in price in the future, and then buys it back when it actually falls and settles for a profit. Mr. Musk said, “I can’t take seriously someone who has a massive short position in Tesla who is committed to solving climate change.
