The Danish royal family attracted public attention last week when they announced that they would strip four of their grandchildren of their titles of “prince” and “princess. Queen Margrethe of Denmark commented that the decision was made with an eye toward the future, but the real reason may be different.

Streamlining” the Royal Family is Necessary to Maintain the Family

On September 28, the Danish Royal Family announced that Queen Margrethe would strip her four grandchildren of their titles as princes and princesses. The four grandchildren are the four children of Prince Joachim, the queen’s second son and sixth in line to the throne. The four grandchildren stripped of their titles are Prince Nikolai (23), Prince Felix (20), Prince Henrik (13), and Princess Athena (10). The four grandchildren born to Queen Margrethe’s eldest son and heir, Crown Prince Frederick, will retain their respective titles.

The queen had explained this by saying that the royal family would play a lesser role in the future and that “streamlining” the royal family would be necessary to maintain it.

However, the Spanish media outlet Vanitatis Elconfidencial reported that Prince Joachim’s “deep love” for Crown Princess Mary, wife of his brother Crown Prince Frederik, has created a rift in the royal family.

According to the paper, the Danish media began speculating that Prince Joachim “may be in love with his sister-in-law (Crown Princess Mary)” immediately after the marriage of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary in 2004.

The Swedish weekly Svensk Damtidning even published a photo of Prince Joachim at a past Royal Guard Solidarity celebration party in which he appeared to be drunk and about to kiss Crown Princess Mary.

Prince Joachim then announced his engagement to his current wife, French Princess Marie, in 2007. Prince Joachim’s love affair with Princess Mary was fueled by the fact that she has the same name as Crown Princess Mary (“Mary” is French for “Marie”) and looks exactly like her.

The rumors of Prince Joachim’s infatuation with Crown Princess Mary were so strong that Queen Margrethe ordered him not to go on unscheduled outings together and to show that there was no conflict between Mary and Marie.

Prince Joachim has long been rumored to be in love with his brother’s wife. It is likely to continue to attract attention in the future.
