Japan’s Kaoru Mitoma, who plays for Brighton in England’s first division, is riding a wave of success, scoring against Bournemouth on February 4 and making it three straight official appearances in his last three games.

While big clubs such as Arsenal, which has Japan’s Takehiro Tomiyasu, are said to be interested, former England international Stan Collimore, writing in his column for the English media outlet Caught Offsaide, opined that “Kaoru Mitoma could be the bargain player of the summer.

Commenting on Brighton’s acquisition from J1 team Kawasaki Frontale for a cheap fee of 3 million pounds, Collimore wrote, “In Japanese soccer, players whose agents think they have further potential and can be sold at the next higher price sign short-term contracts. Then they try to get more commission when they play in the Premier League or other leagues, increase their value, and sell them again,” he noted.

As for Mitoma, he said, “He has integrated very well into the team and is replacing Leandro Trosar. His ability deserves to be seen by everyone, and I would be surprised if a big club does not make him an offer at the end of the season,” he said, predicting a step-up move in the summer.

‘I don’t think he will demand a huge sum of money. He has two years left on his contract with Brighton, but very little is at stake to get him. Even from a business point of view, an offer of £30 million would be hard for Brighton to refuse, as it would represent a 500% return on investment in just 12 months. And the new owners of Chelsea, for example, must be holding their tongues to make such an offer.”
