Manchester U welcomed Charlton Athletic (3rd division), who beat Brighton in the 4th round, at home. Manchester U took control of the game with Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, and Antony Eranga up front, and in the 21st minute, Antony cut in from the right side and sank a superbly controlled shot to give the visitors the lead.

The two quarterfinal matches of the Carabao Cup (EFL Cup) were held on January 10.

The second half started with a one-goal lead, and in the 65th minute, Garnacho came close to scoring from a counter, but was denied by a fine save from the goalkeeper. After a scoreless first half, the visitors scored their first goal in the 60th minute when Dan Byrne broke away from an exchange of passes on the left flank and slotted a right-footed shot into the side netting. In the 72nd minute, Joerington scored from an excellent through ball by Miguel Almiron. Newcastle held on to secure their ticket to the semi-finals.
