Harry Styles won two Grammy Awards® at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards®, the world’s largest music ceremony held just a few days ago.
While many fans were happy to see the achievement of Harry Styles, his acceptance speech is causing controversy among some.
Harry Styles won “Best Pop Vocal Album” and “Album of the Year” at the 65th Annual GRAMMY Awards® held at the Crypt.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, on Monday, February 6 (Japan time). Harry’s win came as a surprise, as “Album of the Year” is one of the four main categories and is a particularly high-profile award, and the category had nominated big-name divas such as Beyoncé and Adele.
Harry, whose album “Harry’s House” was named “Album of the Year,” took the stage and gave a joyful speech, confessing that he was inspired by all the artists nominated in the category.
However, one comment he made toward the end of his speech caused controversy. He said, “This is something that rarely happens to people like me.

According to HuffPost, Harry’s comments caused a backlash from some viewers. In fact, it is very common for white artists to win awards at the Grammy Awards, but on the other hand, it is true that it is a high hurdle for black, Latino, and Asian artists to win major categories. The fact that Harry, who should be in the most likely category to win in terms of race, uttered these words caused widespread embarrassment.
In fact, “Un Verano Sin Ti,” an album by popular Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny, was nominated for “Album of the Year” at the Grammy Awards, but this was the first time that a Spanish-language album was nominated. Also, Beyonce* has now won a total of 32 Grammys in her career. Although she has broken the record for the most Grammy wins in history, she has yet to win the “Album of the Year” award.
No black female artist has won “Album of the Year” since Lauryn Hill (“Miss Education”) at the 41st Grammy Awards (1999).
Incidentally, many of Harry’s fans seem to take his statement “people like me” to mean “people who started their careers as an idol group,” and do not see it as particularly problematic. However, the comment made by Harry, a white male, at the Grammy Awards, which is considered to be predominantly white, was taken to mean more than he intended and caused controversy.
Sam Sanders, a former journalist for National Public Radio, posted on Twitter that “‘This rarely happens to people like me’ is the most white privileged thing ever said at an awards ceremony. He expressed his negative opinion of Harry’s statement.
Viewers also commented as follows.
“I’m trying to understand what that white boy meant by ‘this time this rarely happens to people like me?’?”
“How can a white male who used queer aesthetics to sell an album and win ‘album of the year’ over a black woman say, ‘This rarely happens to people like me’?”
“‘This kind of thing rarely happens to people like me’-white men have won ‘Album of the Year’ many times before.”
While Harry Styles says people like him rarely win, there’s a watch party going on in Puerto Rico to support Benito (referring to Bad Bunny) becoming the first Puerto Rican to win ‘Album of the Year’ at the Grammys.”
It’s not normal for Harry Styles to say, ‘This kind of thing rarely happens to people like me,’ where Benito could have become the (first) Puerto Rican to win ‘Album of the Year’ and Beyoncé the first black female winner since 1999.” I wish he would explain which identity he was referring to when he made that speech.”
