The record was previously held by former U.S. President Barack Obama’s fourth book, “A Promised Land” (2020), which sold 887,000 copies on its release date.

Prince Harry’s “Spare” was released on January 10, US time. Prince Harry’s “Spare” was released on January 10 (U.S. time). The book, which covers Prince Harry’s past drug use, his relationship with the British royal family, his fights with his brother Prince William, his military service in the British army, and his wife, Princess Meghan, was a big hit even before its release.

The book’s record sales prompted the publisher, Penguin Random House, to issue a statement. The first-day sales of Spare are the largest for a nonfiction book published by Penguin Random House to date,” the publisher said in a statement.

Prince Harry also gave interviews on “ITV,” “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” “60 Minutes,” and “Good Morning America” prior to the book’s release, promoting the book extensively. That publicity campaign seems to have been effective.

However, the British royal family does not seem to have a good impression of Prince Harry’s memoir, which could be called a tell-all book, and it is said that it would have deepened the rift in the feud.

A source told ET that the revelations in Spare “deeply upset” his father, King Charles, and that Prince William felt “internally fed up” with the claims made in the book.
