Once the time limit is reached, users will be required to enter a passcode to continue using the app; users under the age of 13 will have this setting by default, and will be required to enter a passcode by a parent or guardian to continue using the app for another 30 minutes.
Users between the ages of 13 and 18 can turn off time-limited mode by entering their own passcode, but if they use the app for more than 100 minutes per day, the app will prompt them to set screen time.
In addition, all teen accounts will receive weekly notifications of their frequency of use and app usage time during the day and night.
TikTok’s decision to introduce the time limit feature was based on academic research and discussions with experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital.
In addition to the screen time limit feature, TikTok will also introduce a Family Pairing feature that allows parents to customize their teenagers’ screen time for each day of the week according to their school or cram school schedules, a dashboard feature that shows a breakdown of time spent using the app, and a mute notification feature that allows parents to mute notifications. A dashboard function that shows a breakdown of app usage time, and a function to mute notifications will also be introduced.
Note that the feature of not receiving push notifications has already been introduced, with accounts of users aged 13 to 15 not receiving notifications from 9 p.m., and accounts of users aged 16 and 17 not receiving notifications from 10 p.m.
