Stevie Wonder was born prematurely as a newborn, and due to excessive oxygen in the incubator, he developed a disease* called retinopathy of prematurity, which left him blind soon after birth. However, he is not totally blind.
*A disease in which retinal blood vessels grow abnormally in the eyeballs of newborns born prematurely.
Stevie played piano, harmonica and bass from an early age and was signed to Motown’s Tamla label at the age of 11. He has had more than 30 US Top 10 hits and has won 22 Grammy Awards.
