World mourns Ryuichi Sakamoto. David Bowie’s son too.

The world is saddened by the death of Ryuichi Sakamoto.

In the USA, the New York Times wrote a major obituary.

In addition, Hollywood industry media such as ‘Variety’, ‘Hollywood Reporter’ and ‘Deadline’ also published news simultaneously. Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, public broadcaster NPR, the UK’s The Guardian and The Independent also covered the news.

 

There have been numerous messages on social media praising his achievements. The Criterion Collection, which restores and distributes historically significant films, gave him love with a heartmark: ‘Goodnight, legendary and much-loved musician, composer, actor and writer Ryuichi Sakamoto. The British Academy (BAFTA) added: ‘We are saddened to hear of the passing of BAFTA winner Ryuichi Sakamoto. He wrote music for films such as The Revenant: the Resurrected, The Last Emperor and Christmas on the Battlefield. He mourned his family’s loss. Mr Sakamoto won a British Academy Award for Best Composition for Merry Christmas on the Battlefield, and was also shortlisted for The Last Emperor and The Revenant – Apple Music Classical also sent its condolences with the words “Art is long, life is short”.

There were also numerous messages from people who knew Sakamoto directly. French musician and synthesiser player Jean-Michel Jarre tweeted, “Dear Ryuichi, RIP. your art will remain forever”, along with a photo of them side by side. Australian composer Lawrence English, also with a photo, sent a message thanking Sakamoto for his warmth and generosity. British DJ and journalist Mary Ann Hobbs wrote: ‘You gave me the most important lesson of all. That every mistake is a gift”, she tweeted.

David Bowie’s son, filmmaker Duncan Jones, who worked with Sakamoto on Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, tweeted, “Sending love to the family and friends of this wonderful artist”. The David Bowie Official account also sent a message with a photo of him and Bowie, and a photo of the ‘Merry Christmas , Mr. Lawrence’ poster.

Karsten Nicolai, aka Alva Noto, who composed the music with him for The Revenant~, said he “misses being with you on this side of life”, while musician Antonio Sanchez, who was briefly involved with Sakamoto on the film, said the experience was “a great honour”. He also sent a message to the audience. British composer John Altman, who worked with Sakamoto on Sheltering Sky, also paid his respects with a photo from that time.
