Jurassic Park, which could be said to have been made for “a film”.

Released in 1993, Jurassic Park is an SFX blockbuster about a theme park inhabited by genetically engineered dinosaurs brought back to life in the modern age, adapted by Steven Spielberg from Michael Crichton’s best-selling novel.

The film was a worldwide hit as a gripping and thrilling piece of entertainment, and has since been followed by The Lost World of Jurassic Park in 1997, Jurassic World in 2015, Jurassic World: Kingdom of Fire in 2018, and 2022’s sequels such as Jurassic World: The New Reign.

At the time of the origin story of the blockbuster series, Spielberg was given permission to make “that film” in history on the condition that he would make Jurassic Park.

The film Spielberg considered more important than Jurassic Park.

Born and raised Jewish and having lost relatives in the Holocaust, Schindler’s List was a film that Spielberg had cherished for many years and wanted to make from the bottom of his heart. The film is about Oskar Schindler, a real-life German businessman who saved many lives from the Nazi genocide of the Jews, and is now regarded as one of the most important historical films in cinema history.

After filming the 1991 film Hook, Spielberg had planned to move on to film Schindler’s List in the fullness of time after about 10 years of planning. However, the terms set by then MCA/Universal president Sid Scheinberg were that if he completed Jurassic Park first, he would be given permission to make Schindler’s List. Spielberg had heard about the film from the author of the original novel, Michael Crichton himself, even before the novel was published, and was eager to make the film, so he accepted the offer with two words.

Two films made under extreme conditions, and it was that ally who helped me.

As promised, Spielberg began filming Jurassic Park in Hawaii in the autumn of 1992, 12 days ahead of schedule, and despite still having post-production work to do, he immediately flew to Poland to shoot Schindler’s List.

Therefore, he was working on the filming of Schindler’s List during the day, while at night he was working on the post-production editing of Jurassic Park via conference calls and satellite channels.

He later said that working simultaneously on an entertainment blockbuster with dinosaurs on the rampage and a serious film about the Holocaust was nerve-wracking and difficult work, and one of the most difficult times in his life as a film-maker. Nevertheless, Schindler’s List was a very important film for Spielberg and a great responsibility, and he even felt that the other films were not so important at the time.

In a recent interview on the talk show The Late Show, Spielberg revealed the secret story that it was actually his friend George Lucas who was asked to direct the rest of the sound work as a pinch-hitter, as he was unable to bear the burden of the project.

After successfully completing the film, Jurassic Park was released in June 1993 and Schindler’s List was released in the US in November of the same year. Schindler’s List, which Spielberg put his whole heart and soul into, successfully won seven Academy Awards, including the coveted Best Film and Best Director awards.

In March 2023, Fablemans, an autobiographical film about how he fulfilled his dream of becoming a film director, has just been released and has made a splash, and he will continue to work on Napoleon (tentative title), a biographical drama about Napoleon, which he inherited from Stanley Kubrick, and the 1968 classic Brit The latest films are also in the pipeline, including a new portrayal of the main character Frank Britt, starring Bradley Cooper. The future films that director Spielberg, loved around the world, continues to produce are not to be missed.
