Documents released after his arraignment state that “Defendant Donald J. Trump engaged in criminal conduct during the 2016 presidential election to prevent information harmful to himself from being disseminated to the voting public, and repeatedly falsified business records to further conceal it. It states that ‘the defendant and several other individuals agreed to this conduct, and the two individuals involved admit that it was illegal’.
Trump is alleged to have paid large hush money to Stormy Daniels, a pornographic actress who accused him of having an affair, and two other women during the 2016 US presidential election, and to have falsified business records to conceal the payments. In total, the charges amount to 34 counts.
The charges Trump is facing are Class E felonies, each of which carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison, Deadline reported. If convicted on all counts, he could face up to 136 years in prison.
On the other hand, some media reports suggest that, as this is his first offence, he will not immediately go to prison if convicted.
At the moment, Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
His arraignment on the day lasted about an hour. Immediately afterwards, Mr Trump travelled to the airport and returned by private jet to his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, where he addressed his supporters.
