The Coachella Festival has a system of fines for failing to clear out after ‘curfew’, but the total fines for the 2023 Coachella Festival were extremely high.
Fines for breaking curfew exceeded $160,000.
Coachella Festival, one of the largest music festivals in the USA, is held in the desert Coachella Valley in Indio, California, USA. 2023 saw Bad Bunny, Black Pink and Frank Ocean headline the festival, but Frank only played the first week. Blink-182, Skrillex, Fred Again and Fortet filled the void.
Did you know that the Coachella Festival has a “curfew”?
According to Pitchfork, in 2013, Coachella Festival organisers Goldenvoice established a “curfew” with the city of Indio, California, where the festival is held. The curfew is until 1am on Friday and Saturday and midnight on Sunday, with a fine of $20,000 per day for five minutes overdue and $1,000 for every minute thereafter.
In fact, the first week of the Coachella Festival, it seems that the “curfew” was violated on all three days of the festival, and the fine was a whopping $117,000, according to TMZ.
After the first week of significant curfew-breaking, the second week of curfew-breaking, it seems that they somehow managed to keep the curfew, going two minutes over on Friday, no curfew-breaking on Saturday and about 16 minutes over on Sunday. In the end, he had to pay a fine, but it seemed to cost him a total of $51,000.
Still, with over $160,000 for two weeks, the fines were huge for a huge festival.
