On Saturday 6 May, the second day of the event, actor Orlando Bloom, known for his roles in The Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean films, appeared on stage.

The Osaka Comic-Con (Tokyo Comic-Con) is an event for entertainment fans that focuses on interaction with foreign celebrity actors. Last summer, the first event was scheduled to be held in Osaka, but was cancelled due to the spread of the new coronavirus. This time, the long-awaited event took place.

On Saturday 6 May, the second day of the event, actor Orlando Bloom appeared on stage for the first time.

Dressed in casual fashion and with a big smile on his face, Orlando took to the stage and said, “Hello everyone! Thanks for coming today!” He continued, “OSAKA, DAISUKI!” in Japanese.

Firstly, the host Sugiyama Supitoyo asked Orlando, “Why are you so cool? and he replied, “I’m the secret to my coolness! That’s following Japanese fashion culture! I love Japanese style more than anything else in the world! All my clothes today are made in Japan”, he said, showing his love for Japan.

Orlando says he first came to Japan when he was 21. He says he has been influenced by the Japanese scenery and style since that time. He also revealed that he loves Japanese fans, especially the respectful way they treat him.

From here, he went on to talk about The Lord of the Rings. When Orlando was asked if he still remembered the ‘Elvish’ he spoke in the film, he replied with ‘Merlon’ (meaning ‘friend’) and his first Elvish line in the role, ‘Govannas vin gwennen le haldir o lorien’ (meaning ‘Thank you, King, for having us’). Thank you for welcoming us.

Orlando played the elf Legolas in The Lord of the Rings and the pirate Will Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean, but when asked which role was more difficult, he replied: “Legolas was the first time I played a role in a film. So Legolas is still very important to me. Legolas wore a wig and coloured contacts, while Will Turner was different, more like himself, a character with long hair. It’s a very memorable time in my life.

The Lord of the Rings made headlines in February this year when film distributor Warner Bros. announced that it would produce several new films in the series.

When asked about the possibility of appearing in a sequel, Orlando said, “You’re also doing a new series on Amazon [The Ring of Power]. And it’s a good idea to make a new film, a sequel! I love the world of (author) J. R. R. Tolkien. In terms of the timeline, is there a role for me there? If I do, I might have to do a bit more make-up (laughs)”, he said, expressing a positive attitude towards appearing in the sequel.

Orlando also stars as a marketing guy called Danny in the live-action film Gran Turismo, based on the popular video game, which was released in Japan in September this year. The film is based on a true story: “The kids do a simulation car race, but Danny makes it happen by getting the kids to race in real racing cars. It’s a crazy idea, but they actually do it. The film is based on a true story and Danny is a real person. It’s a film for dreamers. It’s a very interesting film.””It’s a very interesting film,” he said enthusiastically.

After answering many questions, Orlando concluded by thanking his Japanese fans once again for coming to the event, and then performed Legolas’ line from The Lord of the Rings, “What about side by side with a friend?” from The Lord of the Rings.
