‘The news headlines would have been different if she had been there’
The Royal Family are ‘relieved’ that Princess Meghan did not attend the coronation.
On Wednesday 3 May, Omid Scobie, who has written biographies of Prince Harry and Meghan and is a friend of the pair, appeared on the British talk show This Morning.
He stressed that the reason for Meghan’s absence from the coronation was because it coincided with the birthday of her eldest son, Archie, and added that the British royal family was “relieved” at her decision.
The coronation of King Charles took place in London, UK, on Saturday 6 May. There was much interest in whether or not second son Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, with whom there are rumours of a feud, would attend, but in the end, only Prince Harry attended and Meghan stayed at home in the USA.
Speaking on the programme about why the British royal family did not want the couple to attend together, Omid Scobie said, “You inevitably end up attracting attention to someone who is supposed to be better off not attracting attention,” and added, “Why is Meghan and Harry’s (Prince Harry) presence a big issue? It’s all because the public is always lifting up the topic of the two of them, and even in situations where they shouldn’t be in the spotlight, it’s not allowed,” he continued.
According to Scobie, Meghan is keen to celebrate Archie’s birthday in peace, without getting involved in the furore.
As such, Scobie defends Meghan, saying that reports that she is “deliberately” trying to take attention away from others are “a misunderstanding”.
Scobie said that the public was focusing on the family feud rather than the new King, and that “in this case, if she had come to the UK with her husband and attended the ceremony, the headlines about the coronation would have been very different”, and that the decision not to attend was due to “Meghan’s considerations”. She stressed that her decision not to attend was due to “Meghan’s consideration”.
