‘Goodfellas’ Ray Liotta’s cause of death revealed a year after his passing – he died in his sleep.

The cause of death of actor Ray Liotta, best known for his role in Goodfellas, who died suddenly in the Dominican Republic, has been found.

TMZ reports that Ray died of heart and respiratory problems.

Documents obtained by TMZ list pulmonary oedema (water in the lungs), respiratory failure and acute heart failure as specific causes. Atherosclerosis (thickening of the arteries due to plaque build-up in the intima) was also listed as a cause.

Ray was in the Dominican Republic in May 2022 for the filming of Dangerous Waters. He then died in his sleep; he was 67 years old. According to a TMZ report at the time of his death, no one suspected criminality in his death.

His sudden passing was met with grief by many celebrities and fans; Jennifer Lopez, who co-starred in the NBC cop drama Shades of Blue from 2016 to 2018, wrote on Instagram, “Ray was my partner on ‘Shades of Blue’. The first thing that comes to mind is that he was so kind to my children”, she posted a tribute post dedicated to Ray.

Jennifer also recalled the first time she worked with Ray on set. ‘When we first got on set to do a scene together, there was a spark and a mutual respect and we both knew this was going to be good, we had fun doing the scene together. I felt lucky to work with him and learn from him. Like all artists, he was complex, sincere, honest and very emotional” and “I will always fondly remember our time together”. He concluded his post by writing, ‘I lost a great man today.
