Actor Ray Stevenson, best known for his role as Volstagg in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film series Thor and as the general director of the Indian film RRR, died on 21 May local time, his office announced. he was 58.

 

The cause of death has not been disclosed, but according to the Irish Mirror, Ray was on the Italian island of Ischia filming his new movie Cassino in Ischia when he fell ill and was admitted urgently to a local hospital.

Actor Tadanobu Asano, who played Warriors Three member Hogan in the Thor series, posted a scene from the film on his Instagram following the news of his death and wrote: “Ray Stevenson, I am so sad. I’m really sad because Ray was always really kind, he always took me out for dinner even though it was my first job in the US and I couldn’t speak good English, and he played guitar with me and sang with me and gave me many things, and I really loved him. I saw an Indian film the other day and Ray was in it and I enjoyed it so much that I contacted him and he got back to me straight away and I couldn’t believe it because I was looking forward to seeing him again. Thank you so much, Ray. I will never forget your kindness. Please rest in peace,” he wrote.

James Gunn, best known for directing the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy film series, also took to Twitter and wrote: “Oh my god. So sorry to hear of Ray Stevenson’s passing at such a young age. I only knew him a little through filming the post-credit scenes for The Mighty Thor: The Dark World and through our interactions at events, but he was a laugh and a pleasure to work with. My heart is with his family and friends,” he said of his untimely death.
