‘Out of respect for the original film…’ she reveals her feelings.
Jodie Benson, the original Ariel voice actress in Disney’s The Little Mermaid, has reacted to the additions & changes to the storyline made in the live-action remake.
Released in 1989, The Little Mermaid is a Disney animated classic that tells the story of Ariel, a mermaid who wants to know more about life on land. The live-action remake of this film, starring Harry Bailey, will be released in the US on 26 May (in Japan on 9 June). And it has been reported that the film has been altered in its story and some of the classic songs.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Jodie reacted to the changes to the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. She explained that while it was important to keep the spirit of the original story, it was also important to make Ariel’s story feel relevant to the modern age. ‘You have to grow as a human being and be aware of what is important now and what is not. Things are changing. We have to adapt to that. I think Rob [Marshall] and John [DeLuca] have done a great job of doing that with respect to the original work. But we also need to grow. It’s very important to always keep an interest in where we are and what’s happening around us.”
A major difference in the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid is that Ariel’s motivation to explore the world above the sea is not reliant on her love for Prince Eric, but for more personal reasons. The decision to portray animal characters such as Sebastian and Flander in a realistic rather than cartoonish manner has also been controversial.
