Elemental, which depicts a world populated by the elements of fire, water, earth and wind, opens in theatres on Friday 16 June.

The film’s release will be coincided with the screening of Carl’s Date, an animated short film that follows the popular 2009 film Carl’s Flying House! The film is the “culmination” of Carl’s moving story that moved the world, including Japan, to tears at the time.

Pixar’s animated short film Carl’s Date will be screened at the same time as The Incredible Family, which was released in 2018, and will be the first time in almost five years since Bao, a story featuring a small basket case. The film follows Up, in which Grandpa Carl, whose beloved wife Ellie predeceased him, ties 10,297 balloons to his home and sets off on a great adventure to fulfil a promise he made to his late wife that they would one day visit the “legendary Paradise Falls” together. The story follows the adventures of Up. Grandpa Carl reluctantly agrees to go on a date with a female friend, but he is nervous because he has no idea what the dating scene is like these days. The film depicts a day in the life of Grandpa Carl and his dog, Doug, who can talk to people thanks to his special collar, who helps him relax before the date and teaches him how to make friends, even with dogs.

Up was a huge sensation when it was released and was a worldwide hit. It was the first animated film to be screened as the opening film at the Cannes International Film Festival and won the 67th Golden Globe Awards for Best Animated Film and Best Composition. At the 82nd Academy Awards, the film was nominated for Best Film for the second time in its history, after Beauty and the Beast (1991). Director Bob Peterson, who directed the film at the time and continues with this one, says: “This is a story of friendship, because no one can take Ellie’s place. It’s a tribute to Ellie, who said to me, ‘Have a new adventure’. And this one dovetails nicely with the themes of Elemental”, says Kim Collins, who, like Peterson, continues as producer, “We see this as a culmination. The film ends so beautifully, they walk away together and you can see the bond between them”, suggesting that the story is complete. The series has already featured two animated short films, Dug’s Special Mission, which depicts a day in the life of Dug before he meets Grandpa Carl and the others in the film, and Dug Days, which depicts Dug after the film, but the story of Grandpa Carl and Dug, which is finally coming to a conclusion, is already being anticipated around the world. Elemental, which will be screened after Carl’s Date, is Pixar’s latest film set in the Elemental City, where the “elements” of fire, water, earth and wind live. Ember, a fire girl, is working hard to achieve her dream of taking over her father’s shop for the sake of her family without ever leaving the city of fire, until one day she happens to meet Wade, a young water boy with a free spirit who is the complete opposite of her. While spending time with Wade, Ember is exposed to the vastness of the world for the first time, and suddenly begins to think about her new possibilities… What do I really want to do…? Ember begins to secretly yearn for a place outside the world of fire, but there is a rule in Element City: “Do not get involved with different elements”.

What will the miraculous chemistry between Ember and Wade bring about in the elemental world? In the 100th anniversary year of the Walt Disney Company, we present to you a story of miraculous encounters in the colourful and imaginative Element City that no one has ever known, and a surprising and moving story of a new and unexpected “what if world”. We hope you will enjoy it!
