Timothée Chalamet was cast as the lead role of Willy Wonka in “Wonka” because of a rap video he posted on YouTube from his high school days. Director Paul King revealed.
The film “Wonka,” starring Chalamet, is a prequel to Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ” and tells the story of Wonka before he becomes the owner of the factory.
The film is also a musical, which has been highly anticipated as Chalamet sings and dances to several songs.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, King revealed that he cast Chalamet in the lead role of “Wonka” because of his high school performance on YouTube, which he was convinced would fit the role of Wonka well.
He’s so great that we just offered him the part. I couldn’t think of anyone else. But he is that Timothée Chalamet, and his life is very strange. His high school music performance is on YouTube and has hundreds of thousands of views. I was a fan of Timothée Chalamet, so I knew he was very good at singing and dancing,” commented King. He continued, “I knew he had talent, but I didn’t know how good he was. I had a chance to talk to him and he was quite interested. He had tap danced in high school and said, ‘I want to show people that, too,'” he continued.
The first trailer for “Wonka” was released and showed a young Wonka competing against other chocolate makers with his own magical confections. It is not clear if Wonka raps in the film, but Chalamet had previously revealed that he performed seven songs.
